Goodbye Randy

Last night I left a post on this site filled with anger and hatred.

I lashed out at the world, specifically the situation that brought about the death of a good man who paid the ultimate price to protect our community.  For those that may have been offended by the language, I apologize.  My comments were emotional, but my intent hasn’t changed.

Randy Lacy was an admirable man, a giant in our community.  The respect with which he handled every member of our community, despite which side of the law they may have fallen on, made Clay City a better place.  Today, as we go on with our lives, he is no more.  His life taken by a ruthless thug with aspirations no higher than his next drug fix.

As I read comments left by others in makeshift online memorials, I see the words of people genuinely touched by his kindness.  I count myself among those lucky individuals to have known Randy, and to have been blessed to hear his laugh or receive a subtle tip of the hat as I passed him in traffic.

There’s little that I can say to ease the suffering of his family, or add to the discussion. Everything that can be said about Randy has been said, his sainthood has been established by those that loved him.  I only want to say this:

Our problems in this community have spiraled out of control.  The fate that befell Big Randy was on the horizon, whether we wanted to see it or didn’t.  It is my darkest fear that this type of thing will continue to ravage our community until some sort of action is taken.  I can’t offer solutions, if I could I’d scream them from the highest mountain top.  I can only suggest that we intesify our efforts to bring about real change… to make sure that no other family must suffer this fate.

To the Lacy family, I say thank you.  Thank you for dedicating your lives to making Powell County a better place.  Thank you for giving your sons and daughters to law enforcement.  Thank you for working tirelessly to protect all of us from the forces of evil that threaten our lives on a daily basis.  Your sacrifice does not go unappreciated.

God bless each and every one of you, and God bless you Randy.  Your life has been about helping all of us live better lives, and I hope that where you are now offers the kind of comfort that those of us on earth cannot imagine.  Today, we are all Lacys.  One family, torn apart by unimaginable cruelty.  Tomorrow we begin to heal, the next day we begin to fight.

May God keep and hold each and every one of you.  Please know that my heart breaks at every turn, and that my thoughts are with you.

    Guys/Gals,

Just ‘cuz I’m two hours away doesn’t reduce my level of pissed/upset. I never knew Randy too well outside of dropping off the recycling, but I lived next to Ted when I was young. Bruce and I used to hang out as kids. When you see them let them know I’m thinking about them.

To reinforce your point Cory, when I told my boss about the crime he was aghast at the thought of a single police officer. I had to go into great depths to explain to him the “dynamics” of Powell County law enforcement. Having experienced it firsthand with Cory at dispatch, I have to say I’m with you 100%.

As a part of the Lacy family, I thank you for thinking of us, it means a great deal in this time of sorrow.

I will tell them about this site, and let the rest of the family know of your dedication to Randy.

    Warning:

Some of you may not even want to look at the guy. Mark Hebert drove down and interviewed him in Montgomery Jail.
